Hospice volunteer earns award

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — United Way of Franklin County recently recognized Greta Smith, a hospice volunteer with Lutheran Home Care and Hospice, with a 2011 Volunteer Service Award.

Smith has been a hospice volunteer for the agency for more than seven years. She visits clients in facilities as well as private homes providing respite care, comfort and friendship at a difficult time.

Her sensitivity to the needs of others and her calm, efficient demeanor instill a sense of trust and confidence in all with whom she comes in contact, an official said.

In addition to supporting active clients and their families, Smith also helps the agency's bereavement team follow grieving families with monthly phone contact offering support and encouragement.

Smith is an inspiration to new hospice volunteers with her positive attitude and enthusiasm, love and respect for clients, an official said.
