Charles Richard Phetteplace, 71, went home to be with his Lord, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011.

Born May 27, 1940, in Myersville, Md., he was the son of the late David S. and Lucy Grossnickle Phetteplace.

He served in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea in the tank division and Airborne division.

He was owner and operator of P&S Improvement and The Sawmill.

He was a member of Carpenters Union Local 1145 of D.C.

He is survived by his beloved wife and loving companion of 53 years, Verda Poole Phetteplace; sister, Louise and Lee Snyder; dearest friend and brother at heart, Rick Brunner; daughters, Sheila and Roger Sweigert, and Teresa Billman and Terry Morningstar; sons, John and Donna Phetteplace, and Sean and Nancy Phetteplace; grandchildren, Jack and Ashley Billman, Jason Sweigert, Clint and Olga Billman, Jeromy Sweigert and Brandon Billman; great-grandchildren, Mike, Alexis, Grace, Jake, Matt, Joey and Josh; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son-in-law, Adam Billman; and grandson, U.S. Marine Chad Sweigert.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. The Rev. Ernest Witmer will officiate. Military honors will be provided by Washington County AMVETS Post No. 10 and Marine Corps League of Hagerstown.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Pap was a simple man, and his passion was to feed the hungry and bring joy to children. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to your local food bank or Toys for Tots.
