LEITERSBURG — A Ford Bronco hit a utility pole at the 21700 block of Leitersburg Smithsburg Road on Monday afternoon, Deputy First Class Kemmerer of the Washington County Sheriff's Department said.

There were no injuries.

The utility pole was nearly snapped in two, and the 21700 block of Leitersburg Smithsburg Road remained closed as of 2 p.m.

"This was a single-vehicle accident, and we are very lucky nobody was hurt," said Kemmerer, who did not give his first name.

The driver of the Bronco was going downhill on Leitersburg Smithsburg Road toward Leitersburg Pike (Md. 60) and lost control of the vehicle, Kemmerer said.

"At this point it appears to be a malfunction in the steering wheel," Kemmerer said.

A crew from Potomac Edison is on its way to fix the pole.

Residents in the area did not lose power, but the road will remain closed until the pole is repaired, Kemmerer said. Work was expected to begin at 2:30 p.m.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department and a firetruck from the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Co. are on the scene.

Police responded to the accident at 12:59 p.m. Monday.
