Road, bridge projects to reroute traffic in Franklin, Fulton counties

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced a bridge closure starting this week on Jack Road over Back Creek at the St. Thomas/Hamilton townships line in Franklin County.

The bridge will be closed for four months while construction crews demolish the existing structure and build a new bridge.

The $2.6 million contract was awarded Oct. 31, 2010, to Clearwater Construction Inc. of Mercer County and includes the construction of two new concrete bridges over Back Creek on Jack Road and St. Thomas-Williamson Road, according to a news release.

The bridge on St. Thomas-Williamson Road was scheduled to reopen to traffic, the news release stated.

Motorists will encounter a signed detour by way of Pa. 995/Warm Spring Road, St. Thomas-Williamson Road and U.S. 30. Jack Road averages 1,340 vehicles daily.

PennDOT expects work on the new bridge to be completed and the road reopened to traffic this winter. Construction crews will return in the spring to pave the roadway approaches.

The existing two-span steel I-beam bridge on Jack Road was built in 1938 and is classified as structurally deficient.

Fulton County roadwork

In Fulton County, Pa., evening detours for ramp work at the U.S. 522/U.S. 30 interchange are expected to begin this week, PennDOT announced.

Overnight detours will exist from 5 p.m. to as late as 7 a.m. Only one interchange ramp will be closed at a time for the paving operations.

  • Westbound U.S. 30 travelers wanting to access U.S. 522 will use a 4.2-mile detour that will reroute them from U.S. 30 to Pa. 16 to U.S. 522.
  • Eastbound U.S. 30 travelers wanting to access U.S. 522 will use a 4.5-mile detour that will reroute them from U.S. 30 to Pa. 1004 to U.S. 522.
  • U.S. 522 travelers will use a 2.9-mile detour that will reroute them from U.S. 522 to Pa. 1004 to westbound U.S. 30 and a 2.9-mile detour that will reroute them from U.S. 522 to Pa. 16 to Pa. 1006 in order to access U.S. 30 eastbound.

Overall work on this project will consist of concrete rehabilitation and resurfacing on U.S. 30, as well as drainage and guide-rail upgrades. In addition, the four ramps that make up the U.S. 522/U.S. 30 interchange at McConnellsburg will be repaired, according to a PennDOT news release.

Work on U.S. 30 will continue to take place during daylight hours. Motorists should expect minor delays.

This $6.5 million project is expected to be completed by mid-December.
