WAYNESBORO, Pa. — A Sept. 17 traffic accident on Old Forge Road in Franklin County, Pa., has claimed a second life.
Zachary Downin, 17, of 13796 Harbaugh Church Road in Washington Township, Pa., was pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m. Saturday at York (Pa.) Hospital, the Washington Township Police Department said Monday.
Also killed in the accident was 18-year-old Kyle David Downin, who was pronounced dead at Waynesboro Hospital after the accident. He graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School in June.
Police said Kyle Downin and Zachary Downin were not brothers.
Zachary Downin was in Waynesboro Area Senior High School’s junior class, according to Principal Chris Dennis.
“It is something that a number of our students are talking about and have expressed concerns about,” Dennis said.
Counseling staff is “readily available” for teenagers who are grieving, Dennis said.
Zachary Binnix, 18, of Viewpoint Way in Waynesboro, Pa., was taken to Meritus Medical Center and later transferred to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Washington Township Police said Sept. 19.
Binnix was released from the hospital last week, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police initially did not identify Zachary Downin, who was riding in the Chevrolet Cavalier when it crossed the road and hit a mailbox, utility pole and tree.
The crash occurred at about 5 a.m. near 10238 Old Forge Road, police said.
