Thomas Alvin Burns Jr., 86, of 1092 Kasinof Ave. in Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at his home.

Born Friday, Dec. 26, 1924, in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of the late Thomas A. Burns Sr. and Ethel Freeman Burns.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown since 2002, where he served on the choir and the church council, and as lector. He also held the position of chief financial officer for eight years.

He was employed by IBM for 40 years, retiring in February 1987 as a financial analyst in Bethesda, Md.

He was an honorary past master of Columbia Lodge 58 in Frederick, Md., and master mason of Hagerstown Lodge 217. He also was a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon and York Rite bodies in Frederick.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1946.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Anne Stonestreet and husband, Barry, of Hagerstown; sister, Vivian Pendley of Lilburn, Ga.; and granddaughters, Jean Marie and Emma Kate Stonestreet.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene, in February 1988; son, David Burns; three brothers; and six sisters.

Graveside services will be Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Ringgold Cemetery, Barkdoll Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742, with the Rev. G. Stanley Steele and the Rev. Thomas Perry officiating.

The family will receive friends following the graveside service at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
