Talks between Waynesboro school board and teachers union canceled

Waynesboro Area Education Association asks for more time to review requested information

September 21, 2011

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Negotiations scheduled for today between the Waynesboro Area School Board and its teachers union have been canceled.

Representatives of the bargaining unit, Waynesboro Area Education Association, called for the cancellation because they said they didn't have enough time to review requested information.

In mid-August, the teachers' negotiators asked for information from the district insurance carrier. The board had made a proposal that asked for increased contributions to health insurance premiums.

"We got (the requested information) to them this week," said Richard Galtman, an attorney serving as lead negotiator for the school board.

Union representatives said they needed an opportunity to look over the documents. Galtman said the school board's negotiating team also needs to look at the information.

The next bargaining session is scheduled for Oct. 19, Galtman said.

The two sides have been negotiating a new contract since early 2010. The teachers' last contract expired at the end of the 2009-10 academic year.
