William M. Spangler Sr.

William M. Spangler Sr., 94, of Plantation Drive, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at his home.

Born Feb. 10, 1917, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late George W. and Anna C. (Smith) Spangler.

He was a self-employed welder and farmer, and started the prison ministry at the Hagerstown prison 39 years ago.

He was a member of Willow Brook Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Elsie E. Spangler, whom he married April 2, 1937; daughter, Patricia A. Millard of Missouri; daughter, Beverly M. Grenci of Maryland; daughter, Lois A. Burnett of Maryland; daughter, Virginia M. Campbell of Texas; daughter, Ramona E. Bibi of Michigan; son, Lynnwood P. Spangler of Texas; son, Kim E. Spangler of Florida; sister, Louise Uhl of Virginia; 30 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, William M. Spangler Jr.; a brother, Harold Spangler; and a sister, Minerva Toms.

Services will be Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Willow Brook Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Tim Crosby officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church.
