South High classes invited to homecoming

The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association invites all classes to participate in pregame tailgating on Friday, Sept. 30, before the homecoming game against Poolesville.  All tailgaters are reminded to use the rear entrance at Maryland Avenue.

Tailgating begins at 5 p.m. and the game starts at 7 p.m. All tailgaters are to set up inside and around the bus circle.

Party is Saturday

Dixon-Troxell Post 211 American Legion in Funkstown will hold its Ultimate ’50s and ’60s dinner party Saturday.

The menu includes roast beef, mashed potatoes, vegetables and dinner rolls.  

In addition to dinner, there will be a Hula Hoop contest, limbo contest, impersonators, dance contests, tip jars, door prizes and music from the 1950s and ’60s.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The party begins at 8 p.m. and there will be a cash bar.  


Tickets are available at the Legion home. The event is open to the public.

Legion installs officers

Dixon-Troxell Post 211 American Legion in Funkstown has installed the following officers:

Carroll Gatling, commander; Richard Shipley, first vice president; Charles Batt, second vice president; and Pat Ham, third vice president. Charles Morris will serve as adjutant, and Bill Sollenberger as finance officer. The chaplain is Mike Mullinix, and the sergeant-at-arms is Lynn Spalding. Mike Doarnberger will serve as historian and Walter Cline as judge advocate. The executive committee includes Dave Unger, Gordon Cook, Donald Cook, Frank Wiley and Morris Roberts.
