Waynesboro teen killed, two critically injured in Saturday crash

September 19, 2011

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Two teenagers injured in a Saturday morning accident on Old Forge Road were listed in serious condition in hospitals Monday.

The 5 a.m. accident killed 18-year-old Kyle David Downin, who was pronounced dead at Waynesboro Hospital. He graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School in June.

Zachary Binnix, 18, of Viewpoint Way, Waynesboro, was taken to Meritus Medical Center and later transported to University of Maryland Trauma Center, Washington Township Police said Monday.

Police did not identify a 17-year-old who was in the Chevrolet Cavalier, which crossed the road and hit a mailbox, utility pole and tree.

High School Principal Chris Dennis said students were taking advantage of counseling services throughout the day Monday.

“We had our counseling staff and some additional counseling staff available,” Dennis said, adding that guidance counselors traveled to the high school from other district buildings.

Sometimes, a traumatic situation can bring out emotions in young people who did not know the victims, Dennis said.
