HAGERSTOWN — North Hagerstown won its third straight Washington County Public Schools Tournament title on Saturday night by beating Williamsport 3-2 in a penalty shootout that went seven rounds after the teams played to a scoreless draw.

Dereck Cermeno gave the Hubs (5-0) the 3-2 lead in the seventh round before keeper Max Ober stopped Owen Marx for the win.

Both teams had a chance to win the shootout earlier. With North leading 2-1 entering the fifth round, Conner Troxell’s shot was saved by Wildcats keeper Alex Aleshire, and Nicholas Sauble scored to force extra rounds. After a North miss, Tiago DeSouza — who transferred from North to Williamsport before this season — had a chance to win it, but his shot was stopped by Ober.

Yusuf Bodirov and Casey Goodrich scored for North. Cody Gardenhour found the net for Williamsport.

The teams played as entertaining a scoreless first half as one could hope for, with plenty of superb passing and individual skill on display.

In the 12th minute, North’s Mark Grunberg sent a cross that was headed just high and wide of the goal by Osman Ramizov.

In the 21st minute, Williamsport’s Colton Myers curled a 25-yard free kick over North’s wall, and Ober made a fine diving save before scrambling to cover the rebound.

And in the 36th minute, Grunberg had a golden opportunity in front of goal but mishit the shot and it missed left.

The best chance in the second half came in the 43rd minute when Williamsport’s Brendon Colliflower fed a thru ball to DeSouza, who dribbled right past Ober but couldn’t keep control before the ball went out for a goal kick.
