HAGERSTOWN — North Hagerstown’s football team survived a high-scoring fourth quarter Friday night to defeat Oakdale 47-36 at Mike Callas Stadium.

Junior tailback Phillip Butler scored five touchdowns for the Hubs (2-1). Butler’s first touchdown came on a 20-yard interception return, and his last four touchdowns came on runs. Butler gained 131 rushing yards on 10 carries.

Oakdale (0-3) held a 36-33 lead with under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Junior fullback Kyle Hewlett broke loose for a 37-yard touchdown run to the left side with 3:54 to go, and Mark Grunberg kicked the extra point — one of his five — to give North the lead for good at 40-36.

Just 1:34 later, Butler ripped off a 28-yard touchdown run to the left side and Grunberg added the extra point to give the Hubs the final margin of victory.

The Hubs got on the scoreboard first just 14 seconds into the game on Butler’s interception and Grunberg’s kick.

Just 4:29 later, Butler scored on a 33-yard run to the left side and Grunberg added the kick to give the Hubs a 14-0 advantage.

Junior Nicholas Sponyoe finished with three touchdown runs for the Bears. Sponyoe’s first two touchdowns came in the second quarter on runs of 6 and 2 yards. Kevin Heine added two extra-point kicks as Oakdale evened the score at 14.

Senior quarterback Justin Root scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to give the Hubs a 20-14 halftime advantage.

Root also contributed on special teams as he had three punts of 49, 33 and 46 yards — an average of 42.2 yards per punt.

Just 1:55 into the third quarter, Butler added a 37-yard touchdown run to the right side and Grunberg kicked the extra point to boost the Hubs’ lead to 27-14.

Then came the high-scoring fourth quarter.

Oakdale got a 10-yard touchdown run by Pablo Utrera, then a 51-yard touchdown pass from Crosby Winters to Heine and a two-point conversion run by Jay Molnar to take the lead at 28-27.

Butler had a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Hubs on top, 33-28.

Sponyoe’s 18-yard touchdown run and Molnar’s two-point conversion run enabled the Bears to regain the lead at 36-33.

That set the stage for North Hagerstown’s heroics in the final four minutes to win the game.
