CLEAR SPRING — The Clear Spring Blazers put up a good battle against the Urbana Hawks, but lost three close games and were swept 27-25, 25-21, 25-16 on Thursday night in a prep volleyball match.

“It seems like it was a game of errors on both sides,” Clear Spring coach Sabrina Lee said. “The mental ones killed us the most. Serving was definitely a thorn in our side in Game 1, that’s for sure. We rely on our serving a lot. Urbana is a good team and they definitely benefitted from our mistakes.”

Urbana (2-1) earned its second sweep in two nights, coming off a 3-0 win at Frederick on Wednesday.

“Tonight was all about focusing on solid serving and passing,” Urbana coach Claudia Lapcevich said. “The girls stayed focused and didn’t let falling behind get the best of them.”

Niki Wheeles had nine aces and three kills for Urbana. Setter Kayla Wilkinson had 15 assists and five aces, Katy Pavic added five kills and Hailey Heapes, Devan Dimatteo and Anna Cholewczynski had three kills each.

Junior Sarah Elwood finished with 10 assists for Clear Spring (0-4). Emily Winters added six kills and nine digs, while Morgan Purdham had four blocks.

Alexa Mills served four points in Game 1 to give Clear Spring a 20-17 lead. Later, Wheeles’ three service points put Urbana in front 24-23, and the Hawks broke a 25-25 tie with the final two points.

Elwood’s run of four service points in Game 2 gave the Blazers a 10-5 lead. Wilkinson’s string of four straight service points helped the Hawks reduce the deficit to 13-11, before Wheeles served 10 straight points to give the Hawks the lead for good at 23-16.

Wheeles served the final four service points in Game 3 as Urbana closed it out. Anna Cholewczynski’s block ended the match.

JV: Clear Spring, 2-0.
