Members of destroyed church to hold Mass

September 14, 2011

DOYLESBURG, Pa. — The parishioners of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church will gather in a pavilion this weekend for Mass because an early Sunday fire destroyed their church.

The Rev. James O’Brien said the Harrisburg (Pa.) Diocese will determine whether the 21169 Cross Road church will be rebuilt.

In the meantime, other churches in the Path Valley area reached out to offer their facilities. A few parishioners are leading the efforts to determine if those facilities can be used effectively.

“As Catholics, we can say Mass Saturday night, while most other denominations meet Sundays,” O’Brien said Wednesday.

O’Brien presides over Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, which is associated with Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg, Pa.

Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Jeff Sarver said this week the fire’s cause is undetermined, but he does not believe it started under suspicious circumstances.
