Norman Garfield “Pops” Shanton, 80, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, in the Washington, D.C., VA Medical Center.

Born Feb. 15, 1931, in Shepherdstown, he was the son of the late Mary Hopewell and John Shanton.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army.

He retired as a deck hand in Point Pleasant, W.Va., after 20 years.

He was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and anyone who played the Washington Redskins.

He was a member of the St. John Baptist Church in Shepherdstown.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rosa Lee Shanton of Shepherdstown; four daughters, Margaret Rice and her husband, Andre, Regina Edwards and her husband, Yates, Scarlett Shanton and Roxanne Shanton, all of Martinsburg, W.Va.; five sons, Quinn Shanton of Martinsburg, Vincent Shanton and his wife, Janice, of Lynchburg, Va., Bruce Shanton and his wife, Consuelo, of Ranson, W.Va.; Gregory Shanton and his wife, Michelle, of Newport, N.C., and Todd Shanton of Hagerstown.

He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; six sisters-in-law, Patricia Harrison and Betty Washington, both of Shepherdstown, Eleanor Braxton of Fredericksburg, Va., Wanda Brown and Mary Graham, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Stella Washington of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother-in-law, Thomas M. Washington Jr. of Virginia Beach; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Cook.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at Rosedale Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at St. John Baptist Church in Shepherdstown, with the Rev. Joe Liles officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
