Guided bike ride planned on rail trail

BIG POOL — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service will host a guided bike ride on the Western Maryland Rail Trail Saturday, Sept. 17. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. at the C & O Bicycle Shop, 9 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Hancock.

The public is invited to join a Fort Frederick State Park naturalist for a  guided bike ride on the rail trail.

The ride will be moderately paced with frequent stops to examine the flora and fauna along the way. There will be frequent views of the Potomac River. Many aspects of natural history will be presented, including flowering plants, migratory birds, ecology and geology.

The trail is paved and virtually flat. It is suitable for people of most ages and levels of fitness. The ride will last approximately four hours. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Lunch is available in Hancock.   

The event is free to the public.

The ride could cover as much as 25 miles roundtrip.

Accommodations for individuals with disabilities will be provided upon request. Seven days advance notice is requested. Participants are encouraged to dress for inclement weather or hot sunny days and carry plenty of water.
