Mail Call - Sept. 12

September 12, 2011

“The new jobs President Obama created repairing infrastructure were to be taken out of the first stimulus. Two months ago, he laughed and said his shovel-ready jobs didn’t shovel out.”

— Funkstown

“I wonder if the drought and the fires in Texas are a sign from God, saying Rick Perry should get out of the race.”

— Hagerstown

“It saddens me to think that after 200-some years, some people are still believing that there is no distinction between the civil rights call and the homosexual movement. God help us.”

— Hagerstown

“The Republicans are at it already. They wouldn’t even allow the president to give a speech — the president of the U.S., now — to give a speech on the day of their first debate. Well, you know, he is the president, and I just don’t understand why they just won’t let him do anything.”

— Hagerstown

“Here we go again, folks. President Obama is going to make yet another speech to announce yet another jobs and economic plan ... Is this three strikes and you’re out? I sure hope so. I don’t think our country can survive another four years of waste, fraud and someone who has no other way to solve problems other than throwing money at it. I will take Obama on his word ‘if the economy has not turned around in three years, I don’t deserve another term.’”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“Cearfoss, during the eight years of Bush-Cheney (since you asked) they took care of protecting this country. Clinton neglected addressing the terrorist issue. Iraq was OK’d by the Democrats, so it had to be a plus. Why would an 180-IQ president inherit what President Obama did and double the spending of Bush in less than two years? We had work under Bush, no terrorist attacks, he started the border fence. Obama has lowered our standard of living, sent China and Mexico our work, we’re paying for his union dues, not ours. Wake up.”

— Hagerstown

“Last Sunday my teenage son was riding his bicycle on Virginia Avenue near Halfway. It was very hot that day, and he got dehydrated and overheated, and had to stop. He called my wife and I to come and get him, but we were at least 20 minutes away. We went straight to him, but by the time we got there, a kindhearted stranger had stopped to assist. This woman recognized that my son was in distress and stopped and checked on him. She got him some water and stayed with him until we arrived. Thank God for good people who care enough to do the right thing. And thanks again to that woman.”

— Halfway

“I have been unemployed for two years now and I am getting very frustrated with the situation. I have put in 180 applications, and for some business, four or five, for a job that every month they advertise they need help. Why do employers list the same job over and over again? I also email the human resources and ask them to please contact me and let me know if I would be considered. I just don’t know what it takes to even get an interview. I’ve only had one interview out of 180, and that was over a year ago. Is there anyone else experiencing these issues? My unemployment money runs out in three weeks. I have no idea what I am going to do to pay my bills after that.”

— Hagerstown

“I am so tired of Republicans bashing Democrats, Democrats bashing Republicans. Aren’t we all in this together? Why can’t there be compromises reached? Obviously, both have made good decisions and bad decisions. Why can’t we put six Democrats and six Republicans in a room and give them a topic of the day, and they do not come out until an agreement is reached? An agreement that does not favor one side or the other, but one that favors the citizens of the United States. Wouldn’t that be a change?”

— Funkstown

“To the Halfway person who paid $4,125 in taxes on a $15,000 saving account withdrawal: Sounds like your tax man ripped you off. I withdrew $15,000 from my savings last year, and zero taxes. We closed out my wife’s IRA CD of $8,000 this year, and will pay $300 in taxes.”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“If they want to put Americans back to work and save money, cut state and federal employees’ pay 15 percent, freeze wages for retirement, and for one year. Cut union dues for one year. That doesn’t include the military. They should be full pay.”

— Hagerstown

“The homeless cats that live all around us are numerous; so, so many. So please learn how to trap, neuter and return. We can live in a world where there are no more homeless pets just by spaying and neutering cats in your community.”

— Clear Spring

“Something must be done about the sequencing of the lights on Franklin Street. It has just taken me 45 minutes to get from Cannon Avenue to Jonathan Street. This is ridiculous. And people wonder why downtown is dead. This is part of the reason why. The lights are ridiculous. You sit at a red light, the next red light, the next red light, and there’s no traffic flow at all.”

— Hagerstown

“I think it’s contradictory to use wine and beer as an incentive for fundraisers that benefit CASA and Girls Inc. Surely, many of these recipients of these services have been affected by these two very things.”
