HAGERSTOWN — St. Maria Goretti High School announced that the school is partnering with Cumberland Valley School of Music to offer musical arts classes at Goretti this school year.

Students can take introduction to music, musical theater and choir. Music history, different styles of music and improvisation are a couple of the topics students will study.

CVSM Executive Director Andrew Sussman emphasized how students can benefit from musical arts.

“The classes provide an incentive and enthusiasm for students to explore music more, and it makes a real statement about what’s important for education,” Sussman said.

Students can observe demonstrations of musical instruments and will interact with professional musicians. Twice a month, the class will hold a “Music in Action” session, during which CVSM’s specialized, professional musicians serve as guest instructors on a particular style of music.

The musical theater class will hold a fall and spring musical led by CVSM instructor and drama coach Richard Shoap.

Music instructor Deborah Weihl recently started teaching at CVSM’s Hagerstown location.

She is teaching private lessons in voice, piano, trumpet and French horn at the CVSM location at St. Maria Goretti. All private lessons are open to the public.

Weihl is leading the St. Maria Goretti choir. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Towson University, where she was a piano and voice major, and had a French horn minor; a Master of Science degree in curriculum and instruction from McDaniel College; and a current advanced professional Maryland educator certificate.

Weihl retired from Washington County Public Schools, where she was a choral and instrumental music teacher.

Since 1995, she has been employed by Performance Learning Systems to teach graduate-level education courses for McDaniel College and Wilkes University, as well as other courses for Drexel, Marygrove & Rockford Colleges in Illinois, and The College of New Jersey.

She has led church choirs and taught private lessons for many years.

CVSM and St. Maria Goretti have partnered in the past on musical theater productions and music classes.
