Smithsburg siblings receive Delcan Corp. scholarships

Brother and sister Mitchell Belella and Taylor Belella of Smithsburg are the recipients of scholarships from Delcan Corp.

They are the children of Stephanie and Paul Belella. Their father works at Delcan’s Infrastructure Division in the Vienna, Va., office.

Mitchell graduated from St. Maria Goretti High School in 2008 and Taylor graduated from Smithsburg High School in 2011.

This is the fourth year that Mitchell has received a Delcan scholarship and the first for Taylor.

This year, Delcan selected 21 students to receive scholarships ranging in value from $1,000 to $5,000.

Mitchell Belella is in his fourth year at McDaniel College and is pursuing a degree in business administration.

Mitchell maintains a 3.0 grade-point average while competing for his college’s varsity basketball team and volunteering for a variety of charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, CROP Walk and Hoops for Heart, which raises money to prevent heart disease and stroke.

Upon graduation, Mitchell would like to become a graduate assistant for a college basketball team while pursuing a master’s degree in business administration. Mitchell would like to become a financial adviser  upon completion of his studies, and aspires to help individuals and businesses successfully manage their money.  

Taylor Belella entered her first year at Shepherd University, pursuing a degree in education. Taylor maintained a 3.7 GPA throughout high school while playing on the  varsity volleyball team, winning two state championships and various awards. She also participated on the varsity track and basketball teams.

Taylor has completed various college courses, and was a member of the National Honor Society and National Business Honor Society. She is active in her church’s youth group and  went on a mission trip last summer to help build homes for those less fortunate.
