Northwestern Mutual wins national championship

Northwestern Mutual scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the championship game to win the 2011 ASA Class D National Tournament/Eastern in Salem, Va., last weekend.

The Hagerstown team went 7-1 in the tournament to come out on top of the 63-team field.

The team will play in the ASA World Series at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City on Sept. 29.

Pitcher Billy Smoot was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Smoot, Rocky Wills, Curty Myers, John Hartle and Arthur Fischer were named ASA All-American first teamers. Mick Byers and Tommy McClintock were second-team selections.
