Holiday card drive for local troops begins Oct. 1

The 2011 holiday card drive for local troops serving in the Middle East begins Saturday, Oct. 1, and continues through Sunday, Nov. 20.

Follow these guidelines to send your greetings:

 Remember each card may be read by many service members.

 Cards may be homemade or store bought.

 Do not put cards in envelopes. No postage necessary.

 All cards and messages should be appropriate.

 Cards will be screened for security issues.

 Sign all cards.

 May include messages of well-wishes/support.

 May request a pen-pal.

 Make arrangements for pick-up (local schools and churches) or send to: South Washington County Military Support Group, c/o Lynn Jones, P.O. Box 223, Keedysville, MD 21756.

Donations for mailing costs, holiday candy, snacks and personal care items are needed and appreciated.

Items needed:

 Snack crackers in packs; Tootsie Pops/Blow Pops; candy (no chocolate); instant coffee/tea bags; drink mixes for water bottle/canteen; granola bars/snack bars; gum; peanuts/snack mixes in bags; beef jerky (very popular); individually packed cookies and snack bags; Ramen noodle soups; puzzle books; playing cards; small squirt guns; small Nerf balls; disposable cameras; batteries (AA, AAA, D); toothbrushes and toothpaste; deodorant; shaving cream; hand sanitizer; hand wipes; shampoo (no large bottles); body wash; aspirin products; cold/flu tablets (over-the-counter); lip balm; sunscreen; new DVDs and CDs; writing paper, pens and envelopes; bandanas; hand-held games; and nonaerosol bug spray. Do not send flammables, glass, or aerosoles.

If you have a family member currently serving in the Middle East for the holiday season, send his or her name and unit address to The South Washington County Military Support Group, P.O. Box 223, Keedysville, MD 21756.
