MSO hosts vocal competition on Friday

September 09, 2011

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra will hold its second annual vocal competition for area middle and high school students at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at The Maryland Theatre, 21 S. Potomac St., downtown Hagerstown. The public is invited to attend and admission is $5 per person, for general admission seating, at the door.

The winner of the competition will be given the opportunity to be a featured soloist at the MSO's annual Home for the Holidays concerts in December.

Students in grades six through 12 are asked to submit audition recordings to the MSO by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. These recordings should be no longer than three minutes and present selections of the Broadway show tune, pop standards or classical vocal compositions; no top 40. Finalists will be notified by close of business on Monday, Sept. 19, and will perform live, with piano accompaniment, for a panel of judges on Friday, Sept. 23, at the theater. The panel's celebrity judge will be Broadway singer Ali Mauzey, who will be appearing with the MSO in its pops concert, "Wicked Divas."

The winner will be announced at the MSO Pops! "Wicked Divas" concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Maryland Theatre. All finalists will receive two free tickets to attend the concert.

For more information on the vocal competition, call the MSO at 301-797-4000, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
