Traffic advisories set for Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Air Show

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Organizers of the 2011 Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Open Hour & Air Show next weekend at Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport have released the following parking and travel advisory for the two-day event.

Buses will shuttle spectators to the base of the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard from general event parking between Stewart Avenue and Business Park Drive.

Handicapped parking will be available at the "Sino" parking lot off Novak Drive and a bus shuttle service will transport spectators near the flight line on base.

Parking on the Air Lift Wing base will be limited to VIPs, support staff, vendors and performers. Those permitted to park on base will be given a special pass, which must be displayed in the vehicle.  

No RV parking will be available.

Parking will be prohibited and strictly enforced on the following streets beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 17 and Sept. 18. The restrictions will remain in effect until 8 p.m. on both days.

  • U.S. 11 from Novak Drive to Paynes Ford Road            
  • Business Park Drive from Novak Drive to I-81 Bridge        
  • Steward Avenue from Wren Street to Winchester Avenue
  • Kelly Island Road from Paynes Ford Road to the base's entrance
  • Paynes Ford Road from U.S. 11 to Airport Road
  • Airport Road from Paynes Ford Road to Novak Drive
  • Novak Drive from U.S. 11 to Airport Road

Those violating the restrictions may return to discover their vehicle was towed at their own expense.

No parking will be allowed in the Orgill business parking lot on Business Park Drive,  the Polo Ralph Lauren parking lot on Novak Drive or the Park and Ride lot near the I-81 Bridge.

After the show, spectators will be diverted toward I-81, south on U.S. 11 or Novak Drive toward W.Va. 9.  

Residents between Novak Drive and Paynes Ford Road along U.S. 11 will be recieve a letter to allow their passage through traffic control points.  Spectator traffic will flow around the detour route to the parking area.

 A detour route for show preparations and the event itself will be in effect from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 16 and 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both Sept. 17 and Sept. 18.  The route can be viewed on the Internet at  http://www.martinsburgairshow.com/
