Washington County BOE to allow Wilcox to sign checks

September 08, 2011

The Washington County Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to allow new Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox to sign checks for various school system bank accounts.

"I'd just say you're really getting the keys to the car now Dr. Wilcox," school board member Justin Hartings joked.

The school system has only had two authorized check signers for the past five months — Chief Financial Officer Chris South and Deputy Schools Superintendent Boyd Michael, according to South.

Board policy requires every check to have two signatures, South said.

Adding Wilcox helps in case one of them is out and an emergency check is needed, South said. Historically, the school system has had three signatories, including the superintendent, he said.

Elizabeth Morgan, the previous superintendent, retired at the end of February.

The accounts include payroll, fringe benefit, food services, accounts payable and scholarship accounts.
