Mail Call - Sept. 5

September 05, 2011

“To you great people complaining about the Confederate graves in Edgehill Cemetery: These soldiers were killed in Jefferson County. Their loved ones probably never knew what happened to them, or where they’re buried. So why don’t you leave them alone so they can rest in peace? And may God look over them.”
— Charles Town, W.Va.

“We live above Hancock, on Route 40, the old National Pike. Just because this is an off road doesn’t mean you can give us all your trash and bottles and cans, and your lunch bags and everything else. Knock it off, please. We deserve a clean road, too.”
— Hancock

“This is Monday, the 29th of August, and I’m calling in regard to Williamsport Days. My daughter called me on the phone this morning, and I was much surprised that they didn’t cancel it and they held it in the weather over the weekend, which I was shocked, I and many other ones, and hopefully next year that they’ll have a rain date so the people will be able to attend. I’ve been attending this craft show for 20-some years, and missed it this year. I had no clue that they would hold it in such weather.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about Irene, that’s hitting us right now, which might cost billions of dollars. America needs to wake up now. See how many other countries will hold concerts and everything to help our country out, like we help Haiti and all those other countries. We need to help ourself first, and you’ll see a lot of money it’s going to cost, this storm going through here, Irene, and watch all the countries that don’t help. So wake up, America. We need to help ourself.”
— Retired Navy guy, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

“It’s bad enough that the Washington County government lets the airport fly airplanes all over Maugansville and disturb the people, but now they’re flying helicopters, four of them at a time, over Maugansville, on a Sunday afternoon. You can’t even get any rest on Sunday around here anymore. Washington County government, close this airport down.”
— Washington County

“I think the newspaper could save a little money if they dropped David Limbaugh, now that they have George Michael pushing the radical right-wing agenda.”
— Washington County

“I know Mr. Obama said a couple of months ago that he did not want to force Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi out of power, but he made a remark this past week where he won’t be satisfied until he’s out of power. So one just brought us the other. When it all comes down to the point, he wants him out of power. And look at Egypt today. They’re having problems already with Israel.”
— Smithsburg

“Herald-Mail, you better wake up and stop doing the Allan Powell and Leonard Pitts liberal agenda Democratic party down-the-line articles. American people are tired of hearing and reading about this liberal, noncommon-sense writing, getting shoved down our throats. People are tired of hearing it. People are going to stop buying The Herald-Mail. Like the New York Times and all the other left-wing media-based ... that are in the toilet, Herald-Mail, you need to wake up and start reporting the truth, and not reporting what people’s liberal agendas are.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“Hey, Brightwood Acres East, why should Allan Powell mention Soros, or anybody else other than the Koch brothers that he wrote about? They’re called editorials, not news reporting. When David Limbaugh or Tom Firey write something positive about the president, then I’ll agree with you about having both sides covered by Mr. Powell in his editorials.”
— Keedysville

“I’d like to know why the storm Irene had to be on every TV channel. I know it was a dangerous storm, but why every channel? Just wanted to know.”
— Hagerstown

“I just have to respond to the inaccurate liberal comments. One, would you rather have a president who doesn’t know Elvis’ birthday, or one who thinks we have 57 states? Two, gaining 200,000 jobs in 2 1/2  years — mostly government, temporary, and expensive to the taxpayer — is nothing compared to losing over 400,000 jobs per week. The taxes going up 80 percent on a pension, due to the ... opposing taxes on productive Americans is a false and ridiculous claim. And to the one who can give credit to an ‘R’ when it’s due: Go ahead, then. Make my day. Name one.”

— Hagerstown

“Vote ‘no,’ to take the American flag out of the classroom.”
— Halfway

“Irene is gone, the kids are back in school and Christmas is only four months away. Life is good. Don’t believe everything you hear.”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“I agree that President Obama shouldn’t spend anymore money until the budget is balanced. So in light of that, I don’t want to see the feds paying any money toward Irene cleanup on the East Coast. That’s the states’ responsibility. I’ve been taxed enough already.”
— Hagerstown
