Josiah Oliver Smith, 93, formerly of Hagerstown and Clear Spring, passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at Reeders Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Md.

Born May 27, 1918, in Alliance, Ohio, he was the son of the late Josiah Cramer Smith and Hazel Belle Yoke Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelva E. Smith, in December 2003.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre with the U.S. Army. He previously was employed with Hagerstown Rubber Co. and retired from Mack Trucks in 1983. He was a member of Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 of Clear Spring and United Auto Workers Local 171.

He is survived by two daughters, Sharon K. Smith of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Patti Sue Smith of Hagerstown; three sons, Harry L. Smith of Zebulon, N.C., Allen K. Smith of Wilson, N.C., and Rob L. Smith of Hagerstown; a stepson, Joseph E. Boward of Hagerstown; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Josiah Wayne Smith, and several sisters and brothers.

Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md. The Rev. Dennis Whitmore will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. prior to the service.
