Arlen Mance, 52, of Hagerstown, Md., died Aug. 30, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown. The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. Arlen had suffered from blood clots for several years.

Arlen, known by family and friends as "Pinch," was born in Lorain, Ohio, where he attended Lorain Catholic High School. There, he was a member of the football team, track team and school choir. After graduating, he attended West Virginia State University, where he studied sociology and communications and pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. After leaving college, Arlen resided in St. Albans, W.Va., with his first wife, Cheryl Mance (nee Burt). Arlen later relocated his family to Silver Spring, Md., where he lived for many years.

While in West Virginia, Arlen served as a union steward at Union Carbide Corp. After settling in Maryland, he worked for Mid-Atlantic Medical Services Inc. (MAMSI). He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming director of the electronic communication team. He later worked for United Healthcare. Since 2007, he worked for RR Donnelley as a project manager.

Arlen was preceded in death by his parents, William and Burnell Mance, of Lorain.

He is survived by three children, Arlena Mance (Rand, W.Va.), Erica Mance (Seat Pleasant, Md.) and William Mance (Silver Spring), and one granddaughter, Jasmine. He also is survived by his brother, Tyrone (Statesville, N.C.), and sister, Veronica (Chevy Chase, Md.).

Services will be at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home and Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, MD 20722. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a viewing Saturday, Sept. 10, at 12:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1:30 p.m., with burial to follow immediately.
