ACCIDENT, Md. — Zach Krall rushed for 82 yards on 17 carries and scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 1-yard run in the first quarter as Smithsburg opened its season with a 7-0 victory over Northern Garrett on Friday night.
Zane Gardenhour had 10 tackles and an interception, Robby Hogue had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery and Kevin Needy had seven tackles and a forced fumble for the Leopards (1-0).
Clear Spring 41, Fairfield 12
FAIRFIELD, Pa. — Adam Mellott passed for 158 yards and five touchdowns to lead Clear Spring to a season-opening rout of Fairfield.
Sam Elwood had 30 yards receiving, including three touchdowns, 10 tackles and a sack, Ryan Aaron scored on 30-yard and 55-yard touchdown passes, Stephen Smith scored on a 6-yard run, Chris Miller had an interception and Jesse Gentry had four carries for 67 yards for the Blazers (1-0), who combined for 194 yards rushing.
Liberty 20, Williamsport 12
ELDERSBURG, Md. — Williamsport dropped its season opener to Liberty.
Down 14-0 in the second half, the Wildcats got on the board when Tyler Wise returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.
Liberty took advantage of a Williamsport turnover with an interception returned to the Wildcats’ 4 where the Lions scored for a 20-6 lead.
Williamsport then answered with a 31-yard scoring strike from Brandon Jackson to Jordan Palladino.
“We did not execute well at all offensively,” said Williamsport coach Randy Longnecker. “We couldn’t get out of our own way with mistakes tonight.”
The Wildcats also had a punt return for a touchdown called back.
