Five people were taken to Meritus Medical Center following a two-vehicle accident at about 8:30 p.m. Friday in front of the Lowe's distribution center on Wesel Boulevard in Hagerstown.

The crash occurred when a westbound Saab crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a GMC Jimmy, Hagerstown police Officer T. Helman said.

The Saab came to rest in the middle of the road, but the Jimmy swerved and went over an embankment, Helman said.

A tow truck had to use a cable to pull the Jimmy out of the embankment and back onto the road.

The unidentified driver of the Saab and the four occupants in the Jimmy, two adults and two children, were taken to the hospital as a precaution, Helman said.

Wesel Boulevard was closed for almost an hour as rescue personnel responded to the scene. The roadway was reopened at about 9:25 p.m.
