Maurice Joseph Murphy, 87, of Luray, Va., died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011.

Born June 17, 1924, in Silver Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Bernard Murphy and Helen Barnes Murphy Hull.

Mr. Murphy proudly served in the U.S. Army from March 1943 to March 1946. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On June 8, 1944, he married the former Thelma W. Weakley, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are seven children, Cynthia and Donald Smallwood of Fairfield, Pa., Mike and Patti Murphy of Warfordsburg, Pa., Brenda and Ben Dodson of Luray, Kenny Murphy and Lisa Johnson of Fairfield, Don and Sue Murphy of Frederick, Md., Doug and Lisa Murphy of Frederick, and Dan and Jacinta Murphy of Rockville, Md.; a sister, Patsy Rollins of Frederick; 13 grandchildren, Jeff and Jen Smallwood, Christopher Smallwood, Erin and Scott Montana, Natalie and Meade Whitaker, Katie and Daniel Weatherholt, Shaun Murphy, Stefani Murphy, Kenny Parker, Shanon Murphy, Bradley Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Andrew Murphy and Danielle Murphy; six great-grandchildren, Spencer and Riley Smallwood, Elliott and Evan Montana, Alex Murphy and Ellie Whitaker; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Murphy; a brother, Bernard Murphy; a sister, Peggy Murphy; and a granddaughter, Jessica Murphy.

A memorial service will be Friday, Sept. 2, at 11:30 a.m. at Stanley United Methodist Church. Burial will be later in September in Burtonsville, Md.; arrangements are pending.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank or to your local food bank.
