Mail Call - Aug. 31

August 30, 2011

“With fall soon approaching and the schools here in Washington County opening this week, my question is when is the Washington County roads department going to fill the potholes on the raceway to the east, Old Forge Road, east of Hagerstown? It needs to be done now.”
— Hagerstown

“I had to respond to the caller from Hagerstown who said we don’t need environmentalists in this country. Well, do we want to go back to the days where toxic waste was dumped everywhere and poisoned our water, and where the air was totally unfit to breathe, and back to the cancer clusters, and children dying at young ages because of this?”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“I am proud of my 15-year-old grandson for returning a credit card to a lady in the store where he saw her drop it the other day, and I’m really pleased with her for rewarding him with a bottle of Gatorade, confirming that what he thought was true, that there are good people out there, and we just try to help one another.”
— Sharpsburg

“I’m calling about a Mail Call in Monday, Aug. 22, about President Obama taking a vacation at Martha’s Vineyard. In my opinion, the president has a lot on his shoulders, whether people don’t like him or not, and I think he is very much entitled to some leisure time. Any other president always had some leisure time, so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him taking a vacation.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“Wondering about the barrels on Route 40 west above Huyetts Crossroads there, sitting along the road. They’ve been there for about three weeks or maybe a month now, and (there’s) no work going on there. I wonder why the state is waiting on it to snow. Maybe they’ll get the rest of the blacktop down, and they can get it all opened up before wintertime.”
— West Hagerstown

“Well, I was just wondering if anybody’s called in. I live on Indiana Avenue in Hagerstown, and I was sitting in my recliner, which is an electric lift chair, and it shook like crazy, and so did my house. But I thought my recliner blew up or something, and I unplugged it and didn’t pay any more attention to it. And I think I felt the earthquake. I’m not sure.”
