SHA: No Washington County roads closed as a result of Irene

August 29, 2011

No roads are closed in Washington County from the effects of Hurricane Irene, David Buck, spokesperson for the Maryland State Highway Administration, said Monday.

There are also no traffic lights out in the county.

The only road that was closed by the SHA after the hurricane hit was Alternate U.S. 40 at Zittlestown Road near Boonsboro, Buck said.  It was closed around 12:30 p.m. Sunday because a tree limb was in the road. The limb was cleared off the road and the road reopened at 12:50 p.m.

Approximately 200 different roads were closed across Maryland after the hurricane hit, according to Buck. However, Washington County avoided most of the damage, he said.
