Troop 95's Martin earns Eagle Scout rank

SHADY GROVE, Pa. — Gabriel Martin of Troop 95 in Shady Grove was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.

The ceremony, held at Shady Grove Community Center, was performed by members of the Order of the Arrow Guneukitschik Lodge ceremonies team.

His Eagle Scout project was to construct a Mohawk Walk as part of the ropes course at Cove Valley Christian Youth Camp in Little Cove, Pa.

Pastor Galen Lehman from Salem Ridge Community Church offered an invocation and members of Troop 95 presented the colors. John Alleman, Tuscarora District Advancement Committee member, officially convened the Court of Honor.

Leigh Martin, Gabe’s mother, pinned the Eagle Scout medal on his uniform, and he in turn presented her with the Eagle Scout Mother’s pin. Gabe’s father, Scott Martin, presented Gabe with his certificate and then was given the Eagle Scout Father’s pin.

The Eagle Scout Mentor pin was given to Nate Bacon, Troop 95 committee member and family friend, and Seth Martin, Gabe’s older brother and fellow Eagle Scout.

Rich Melius, Troop 95 Scoutmaster, gave Gabe a crystal Eagle on behalf of the troop to commemorate his achievement.

A benediction by Lehman brought the official ceremony to a close. A reception followed for family and friends.

Gabe began Scouting in 1999 with Cub Scout Pack 95. He earned his Arrow of Light in 2004 and crossed over to Troop 95. On his path to Eagle Scout, he earned 31 merit badges.

His leadership in the troop included photographer, patrol leader, senior patrol leader and Order of the Arrow troop representative.

Gabe has traveled to Canada and the Grand Canyon with Troop 95.

He was inducted into the Order of the Arrow Guneukitschik Lodge 317 in the summer of 2007. He became a Vigil Honor member in 2011.

In the lodge, he served as treasurer, vice chief of programs, and vice chief of membership.

After attending Sinoquipe Scout Reservation for many years, he as been on staff since 2008.

This past summer he served as an aquatics instructor.

Gabe was a staff member for the 2009 and 2011 Mason-Dixon Council National Youth Leadership course at Camp Sinoquipe.

Gabe is a freshman attending California University of Pennsylvania, pursuing a degree in environmental studies. He is a 2011 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School.
