HCC offers grant writing workshop, bookkeeping course

HAGERSTOWN — The Continuing Education and Community Services Division at Hagerstown Community College will offer a grant-writing workshop titled “Grant Writing — Show Me the Money” in October.

Taught by grant writer Denise Schlegel, the three-day workshop provides instruction for beginning grant writers and experienced professionals. Topics include grant components and development, the identification of funding sources and the submission process for grant proposals. The workshop will be held daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., beginning Tuesday, Oct. 18, and ending Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Career Programs Building on HCC’s main campus.

The cost is $315 per person after Sept. 15. Participants who register before Sept. 15 will be eligible to receive an early-bird registration rate of $265 per person. Registration fee includes all tuition, fees and material costs, including the “Show Me the Money” workbook. Students are asked to bring a project idea to the workshop, and are also encouraged to provide a funding announcement or a request for proposals.

An expert in the field, Schlegel has served as a peer grant reviewer for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; has developed curriculum for the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C.; and facilitated strategic planning with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Entry-level bookkeeping course

Hagerstown Community College’s Continuing Education and Community Services Division is offering “Bookkeeper — Entry Level I” on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., beginning Sept. 21 and ending Dec. 7.

The entry-level course will teach practical approaches to real-life issues and teach participants how to master basic record-keeping procedures.

Topics covered will include the fundamentals of accounting, accounting cycles, journal and ledger entries, financial statements and other basic procedures. The cost is $500.

All classes will be held in the Career Programs Building on HCC’s main campus. Class size is limited to 20 participants.
