Bulldogs, Applemen win season openers

Martinsburg 7, Sherando (Va.) 0

STEPHENS CITY, Va. — The Martinsburg Bulldogs began defense of their Class AAA state title with a hard-fought victory over Sherando on Friday.

Quarterback Brandon Ashenfelter scored the only touchdown of the game on a 7-yard run early in the second quarter for Martinsburg, which has won 15 straight games.

It was the first meeting of the schools since 2002, when Martinsburg dismantled Sherando, 75-3.

Musselman 30, Skyline (Va.) 14

INWOOD, W.Va. — Josh Ferguson rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt 52 yards for another score as Musselman opened the season with a victory.

Caleb Dembeck completed 8 of 18 passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns for the Applemen. Darren Zombro had five catches for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Hedgesville 38, Washington 6

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — Troy Markley ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more as Hedgesville rolled past Washington in the season opener for both teams on Thursday.

Markley ran for 111 yards, including scoring runs of 23 and 45 yards, and passed for 122 yards.

Tyrek Collier scored on a 2-yard run for Washington.

BOYS SOCCER

Goretti 2, Hedgesville 0

Matteo Pelja and Rodrigo Reyna each scored a goal to lift St. Maria Goretti to a season-opening victory over Hedgesville.

Kevin Proctor and Clarence Wroblewski had assists for the Gaels. Drew Katrina had eight saves and John Winalski had five to combine on the shutout.
