Augustoberfest still on as scheduled

August 26, 2011

HAGERSTOWN — While Augustoberfest event organizers are continually monitoring the path of Hurricane Irene, this weekend’s 16th Annual Augustoberfest is currently scheduled to run as planned, the City of Hagerstown announced in a news release Friday morning.

“We are constantly checking the latest weather reports,” city Communications Affairs Manager Karen Giffin said in the release. “While we will continue to monitor those reports, we are confident that the Augustoberfest celebration can go on as planned in City Center.”

According to Giffin, the main tent and additional tents in the city's central parking lot are being secured to withstand the possibility of strong wind gusts.

If necessary,  the “Frühschoppen” German brunch scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday will be moved indoors, Giffin said.

“At this time we’ve been told that if we see any effects from Irene, it will possibly be overnight on Saturday,” Giffin said in the news release. “We will do everything we can to secure our festival set-up, and we hope that the community will come out and celebrate with us on Saturday and Sunday if all remains as currently forecasted.”

Event updates will be posted on the city’s Facebook page, as well as on the Augustoberfest website.
