Griffin Almany, a frequent donor to the Humane Society of Washington County, made a big donation on Aug. 3. On that day, he presented shelter Executive Director Paul Miller with a donation of $244.13.

Griffin, 9, of Fairplay, attends Williamsport Elementary School, where he will be a fourth-grader this fall.

His donation resulted from being honored by Kids Are Heroes in June. Kids Are Heroes is a Frederick County nonprofit organization that gives monthly honors to encourage children to volunteer.

As part of the honor, Griffin was invited to collect coins in the fountain at Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick, Md., and donate the cash to the charity of his choice.

He chose the Humane Society of Washington County.
