Mail Call - Aug. 25

August 25, 2011

“Leftist callers blaming tea partiers for the credit downgrade and economic crisis is like blaming someone who calls in a fire alarm for the fire. It happened not because we got what we wanted, but because we didn’t. Standard & Poor’s warned of a downgrade unless there were real, substantial spending cuts, like we wanted, instead of the minuscule cuts, $100 billion a year and multi-trillion-dollar budgets that we actually got. But President Obama, the congressional Democrats and big spending establishment RINO Republicans ignored this. So put the blame where it truly belongs, on them.”

— Frederick, Md.

“I think the way to fix the national debt is to get rid of the IRS and have a national sales tax, because they say that half of the people in the U.S. don’t even pay income tax. By having a flat tax on all purchases, everyone would pay the same amount, and the rich people would have to also pay and they wouldn’t have tax loopholes, to get around paying their taxes. I think that would solve our problems.”

— Williamsport

“Hey, come on now, give me a break. Quit printing in the paper, please, about a man kissing his mother on the lips. Duh. I think my coffee’s going to come up I had this morning. I am all for a man or a woman kissing their mother, but please, not on the lips; on the cheek or forehead, we do that to my mother-in-law, and we love it. But come on now, get off of it. Whoever wrote that in ... I’d appreciate it if you’d print this. This is just one out of a thousand you’re going to get, probably.”

— Hagerstown

“It would be nice if they would give folks who take the time and effort to recycle incentives. Sen. Manchin from West Virginia should run for president. He seems to have more common sense than all of the leaders put together. And does anyone know what is going in the old County Market?”

— Hagerstown

“Have the burning laws for Washington County changed, or is everyone allowed to have a receptacle in their backyard and burn trash all night long, into the early morning? Rubber, plastic, anything that makes a humongous stench. We are not even allowed to open our windows without having the smell come in, from Friday night to Monday. I think something needs to be done about this. I live on the eastern edge of the city. Our county workers need to do a better job at investigating complaints.”

— Chewsville

“I ask American citizens, white, black, Asian, Hispanic, or of any origin, to wake up and voice your concern to any legislator or media venue about the invasion of your country by illegal aliens. I’m all for legal immigration of any foreigner who wants to better his lot in life, but not those who abuse our systems or illicitly take from public assistance and services, especially, giving birth to their children and the instant citizenship granted them. It must stop now. Wake up, America, before it’s too late.”

— Martinsburg, W.Va.

“Memo to Washington: I am a U.S. citizen. I want all the freebies and giveaways you and I can think of. I want no taxes, no national debt, perfect infrastructure and services, with an enormous salary — a job with an enormous salary and 52 weeks vacation, plus frequent raises. Please provide this by tomorrow.”

— Hagerstown

“The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees should play each other the entire 162-game schedule. Then at the end of the year the winner of that series would play the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. ESPN and Fox Sports would love that. The other 29 teams in the major leagues would play a normal season, have their own playoffs and world series. It’s gotten to the point where all the other teams in National and American leagues are just minor league teams to the mighty Yankees and Red Sox. Just recently the Phillies have joined in this elite company. Baseball has turned into such a bore. Until they decide to get a salary cap, as the NFL has, with great success, it will remain just that.”

— Hagerstown

“I am really very sad and angry. The comment in Monday’s Mail Call about FDR leading us through seven years that got us nowhere, ‘while other countries prospered,’ just shows how terribly ignorant our voters are today. Franklin Delano Roosevelt got us to where we could be the arsenal for democracy, to arm the allies against all those other countries that did not prosper, but fell into the hands of Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, the emperor of Japan. The whole world was involved in handling those ‘other countries’ that did not ‘prosper.’ It was called World War II, and it cost tens of millions of lives, not to mention the debt we went into in monies.”

— North Hagerstown

“CSRS federal retirees are penalized by getting little or no Social Security benefits earned on both their own paid-in quarters or qualifying spouse benefit. Most times, an offset of their federal retirement wipes out any Social Security benefit. If they go back to work, private sector employers are still required to deduct Social Security from their earnings. Absurd, you say. Yes, it is, but if you doubt this, just check it out yourself.”

— Washington County

“To the person in Greencastle: Hogs don’t lay. Chickens do, but not in streams.”
