Charles Wilbur Thompson Sr., 78, of Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born Nov. 29, 1932, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late Herbert E. and Evelyn Linton Thompson.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Marine Corps.

He was employed by Hiway Furniture for 24 years and Keystone Ford for 15 years.

He was a member of Evangel Baptist Church.

He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rosemarie Thompson; two sons, Charles W. Thompson Jr. and his wife, Belinda, of Hagerstown, and Gregory Thompson and his wife, Marcia, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one brother, William B. Thompson of Hagerstown; one sister-in-law, Mary Bartles and her husband, Jake, of Hagerstown; one brother-in-law, Vernon McSherry and his wife, Carolyn, of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Eugene Thompson.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Evangel Baptist Church, 17922 Broadfording Road, Hagerstown. Pastor Ronald K. Faith will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
