Community band kicks off Williamsport Days

Williamsport Days kicks off Thursday at 7 p.m. with the annual Williamsport Community Band Concert at the Byron Memorial Park Bandstand.

There will be a tribute to Luther "Jay" Grimes, recognizing his 50th anniversary of service to the Williamsport Voluntary Fire Station. Bring a chair or blanket. In case of rain, festivities will be held in Springfield Farm Barn.

Other highlights of the four-day event include:

  • The Williamsport Memorial Library's annual book sale in the lower level of the library runs Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
  • The Lions Club's annual ox roast will be Friday, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Order of Red Men Tribe 84 pavilion, 16129 Lappans Road. The meal includes roast beef sandwich, coleslaw, all-you-can-eat corn, and a drink. Tickets cost $9. Tickets are available from any Lions Club member or at the event.
  • Also on Friday, DJ TNT will provide the music for the free street dance on East Salisbury Street, starting at 7 p.m.
  • On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., craft and food vendors will be set up in Byron Park, and DJ TNT will provide music and perform his Elvis tribute show several times.

The Town Museum, in the lower level of Springfield Farm Barn, will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday with many local displays and activities.

Canal Days

Williamsport Canal Days run in conjunction with Williamsport Days on Saturday and Sunday. Ride the free trolley from Byron Memorial Park to Cushwa Basin, Lock 44 and back.

There will be tours of the historical buildings, exhibits and films, including the canal launch boat in the basin. Participants can take a bike ride with a ranger from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

On Sunday, Matthew Dodd will entertain from noon to 3 p.m. with songs and canal stories.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, the canal family reunion will be held at the Trolley Barn. Local residents will talk about their direct connection, or their family's connection to the history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

WHS Class of 1966 to hold reunion

Williamsport High School Class of 1966 will hold its 45th reunion Friday, Sept. 16, at the Order of Red Men Tribe 84, 16129 Lappans Road.

The evening will begin with a reception from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by dinner. Class members who wish to attend or need more information, call Ned Ardinger at 301-223-7349.

The reunion committee needs addresses for the following classmates: Carmen Anderson Dickerson, Patricia Carter Bradley, Anthony Taddo, John Delauter, Sarah Michael Josey, Barbara Miller Delauter, Catherine Johnson Yentsch, Rebecca Baumgardner, Stanley Mentzer and Francis Mason.

Happy birthday wishes

Happy birthday to Patricia Jean Gehr, who turns 66 today. And birthday wishes go out to Terica Ann Welch as she turns 49 on Saturday.

WHS Class of 1971 reunion reminder

Here's a reminder to 1971 Williamsport High School classmates to respond to attend the reunion scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Crazy Horse Restaurant in Hagerstown. Tickets cost $25 per person.
