Poffenberger wins at Southside
Hagerstown native Glen Poffenberger won the first Welcome Back King of the Hill Tenpin Tournament, open to USBC sanctioned bowlers, on Sunday.

After a field of 25 competed in six qualifying games, five individuals competed in a stepladder format. Stepladder brackets included fourth-seed Phil Fox defeating fifth-seed Todd Reiff, 188-171  In the next match, third-seed Glen Poffenberger defeated Fox 223-211 and continued his way to the top by defeating second-seed Don Curry in a two-frame roll (after tying with 190), 49-48, and first-seed Jason Long, 242-207.
Hagerstown’s John Hill recorded his first ace in 26 years of playing golf on Friday at Black Rock during the Aspire to Serve church tournament. He used an 8-iron on the par-3 15th hole, measuring 147 yards. Witnesses were Jack Hill, Jim Young and Donnie Dintaman.

On Aug. 13, Hagerstown’s Larry Mackereth scored his sixth ace in 30 years using a 5-hybrid on the par-3 15th, again playing 147 yards. Witnesses were Doug Schlotterbeck, Pete Favret and Randy Gipe.
