Mail Call - Aug. 22

August 22, 2011

“Hancock caller, I don’t know, and neither do you, since you only speculate that those NIH grants to Chinese scientists are going to fund disease cures, what kind of research they’re actually doing, nor do I care. I object, on principle, to our tax dollars funding foreign, especially communist, government institutions, when we’re running trillion-dollar deficits, period, and if you really think with their track record in ideology — this is a government that murders political prisoners in order to sell their organs — that no matter who funded the research, if a Chinese scientist found a cure, they’d just give it to the world and ‘help us all,’ then I’ve got a bridge over the Potomac River you’ll want to buy.”

— Frederick, Md.

“President Obama, enjoy your vacation at Martha’s Vineyard. Most Americans could not afford a vacation this year. I hope the change is you’re out next election.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m so weary of hearing about making cuts to entitlements in the military, and nothing about the self-imposed royal elite. Cuts should be made to them before entitlements in the military. Our lawmakers should put the money back they stole from Social Security and eliminate that problem, or is that just too easy? Why are they paid so much for so little productive work? Increasing spending with no regard for cuts or a balanced budget is the only thing they’re good at, honestly.”

— Hagerstown

“George Bush’s vacation to Crawford, Texas, every August was cheaper than President Obama’s every August to Martha’s Vineyard, hobnobbing with the super-rich jet owners.”

— Funkstown

“Do not be a bad neighbor. You should not covet your neighbor’s house, and you should not covet your neighbor’s wife.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m calling concerning East Chapline Street, at the post office. People really need to start slowing down and look. The speed limit is 25 mph. It is not anywhere from 45 to 60. Most traffic is one-way lane through, because of parking on both sides. There’s a ton of kids and a ton of traffic. Slow down before someone gets killed.”

— Sharpsburg

“To the tenants who live in the big apartments: They raised our rent. Now they don’t have enough help. We have to clean our own halls and windows that come into the apartments. This is ridiculous. Come on, apartment people, let’s fight them. We do not have to clean any carpets and windows. They raised our rent. Fight them.”

— Longmeadow Road

“When President Clinton left office, our budget was in the black for the first time in ages, and when Bush actually took over as president, he ordered all of those tax cuts. That’s the reason why we’re in the red right now, because there’s no money coming in from a tax raise.”

— Martinsburg, W.Va.

“I have to say this, just because it makes so much sense. To quote a very intelligent man, once again, Mark Twain: To keep your mouth shut and be thought of as an idiot is so much better than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

— Boonsboro

“Yesterday, there was a large discussion on why two businesses are leaving the downtown area and moving into the outskirts. Reading the paper today, headlines concern ‘Hagerstown man arrested after jumping from third-floor window’ (finding various drugs and drug paraphernalia, as well as beating his girlfriend), 93 pounds marijuana, firearms, cash, in Hagerstown. This, along with economical reasons, is why these businesses are leaving the downtown area. Drugs and alcohol are a huge problem in this area. ... The real problem lies in economical growth and drugs. Once the economy gets turned around, and the drugs, prostitution and alcoholics leave the area, then things will turn around for Hagerstown.”

— Martinsburg, W.Va.

“The real reason for Sarah Palin’s unending self-promotion tours? Buy my books. Plus the unstated reason is, I’m here, I’m available, would someone please give me an important job?”

— Boonsboro

“I am calling to put in a second complaint about the column of David Limbaugh. His column never seems to have any substance to it, and all he does is spews out comments and criticism and hatred because he has an obsession with President Obama. And I would hope that you all would stop printing his column.”

— Hagerstown

“With Congress and our politicians with plenty of help from organizations like the ACLU, plus others, taking away practically any discipline allowed by parents and teachers, etc., is the main reason we’re having so many problems with our youth. Also, with children who also didn’t have much discipline and proper upbringing, having children, it’s only going to get worse. Go to the draft and the armed forces for 18-year-olds, for both men and women.”

— Hagerstown

“We need a balanced budget amendment with an up-and-down vote by the House and the Senate. Then there can be no slight-of-hand on where each member stands. Perhaps a balanced budget amendment should be put to a vote by the taxpayers.”

— Hagerstown

“Does anybody have a good recipe for snowball seafoam out there?”

— Hagerstown
