HALFWAY — Emergency crews were called Sunday to Performance Pipe at 11711 Hopewell Road for a person with a traumatic injury, according to Washington County Emergency Services.

The call went out around 2:45 p.m. Sunday for a woman hit in the head with a 1,000-pound pipe, a 911 dispatcher said.

The woman was taken to Meritus Medical Center with severe head trauma, a 911 dispatcher said.

Performance Pipe, a division of Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., manufactures polyethylene pipe, tubing and conduit for the gas distribution, industrial, municipal, energy and telecommunications markets, according to the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission’s latest Business & Industry Directory.
The company employs 60 people, according to the directory.

A man who answered the phone at the plant Sunday afternoon said he couldn’t talk about the incident.

A statement from Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. spokeswoman Melanie Samuelson confirmed that an incident occurred at the Hagerstown facility and that the person involved was immediately taken to the hospital.

“At this time, our concern is with the employee and their family,” the statement said.
