Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - Aug. 20

August 19, 2011

Thumbs up to the organizers behind the inaugural Krumpe's Donut Alley Rally 5K last Friday. The event was a delicious delight to runners and participants — and attracted a good first-time crowd of more than 300 runners and walkers. These are the kinds of events that give a community its flavor and personality.

Thumbs up to churches and other groups in the Tri-State area who have sponsored backpack and school supply giveaways. This is a noble, yet practical, way to help families and children during tough economic times.

Thumbs up to the Hagerstown Suns for honoring hometown hero Nick Adenhart last week. The Suns honored the late Williamsport star with Nick Adenhart Night on Tuesday by placing a plaque bearing his name on its Wall of Fame in the right field corner to highlight a full night of festivities at Municipal Stadium.

Thumbs down to those who continue to commit senseless acts of vandalism and theft. The Tri-State area has seen a rash of these types of crimes lately. In addition to the personal, economic and emotional toll these take on victims, they also take up valuable time for police, who have more important things to do.
