Pros miss PNC berth

POTOMAC FALLS, Va. — Beaver Creek Country Club professional Dirk Schultz and Fountain Head Country Club professional Jim Schouller each missed out on gaining a berth in the PNC National Championship next June.

After a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday in the second round of the Middle Atlantic PGA Championship at Trump National, Schultz shot a final-round 4-over 76 at Trump National’s Championship Course on Wednesday and finished in a tie for 36th place. His total for three rounds was 8-over 224.

Schouller, after a 1-under 71 in the opening round, shot a 79 on Tuesday, but his 150 total was good enough to make the cut for the final round. He ended with a 75 for a 225 total and a tie for 42nd place.

David Hutsell, from the Elkridge Club and the current PNC Champion, led the field with an 8-under 208.

Maryland Mid-Am

TOWSON, Md. — Local golfers from Beaver Creek completed the 25th annual Maryland Mid-Amateur, played at Towson Golf & Country Club on Tuesday.

Ken Lampard finished in a tie for 23rd with a 76-150; Steve Ligi had a 74-149 for a tie for 19th and Greg Henry tied for 27th with a 76-151.

Western Heights volleyball

The Western Heights volleyball program, for players in grades six through eight, will hold registration Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. In addition, signups will take place Aug. 24-26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each day at the back entrance of the gym. A registration/consent form must be filled out with a $30 fee due at registration, which includes a three-hour clinic that’s part of the program.

The times for the clinics are as follows:

* Sixth grade — Aug. 31, 6 to 8:45 p.m.

* Seventh grade — Aug. 30, 6 to 8:45 p.m.

* Eighth grade — Aug. 29, 6 to 8:45 p.m.

After the clinics, travel teams for each grade will be selected to represent the school, and intramural teams will be drafted with practices running through September. Volunteers are needed to coach, referee, judge lines and keep score.

NFL Punt, Pass & Kick

The Hagerstown Youth Football & Athletic Association will hold the annual local NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition on Aug. 27 at noon at North Hagerstown High School. Boys and girls ages 6 to 15 can participate for free. Age group winners will be eligible to compete at the sectional competition in Westminster, Md., later this fall.
