Paul E. Garling, 85, of 49 Edward Drive, Greencastle, Pa., died at 12:38 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Waynesboro Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past several years.

Born March 16, 1926, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Roy B. and Margaret B. (Myers) Garling.

Paul was employed by the Jamison Door Co. in Hagerstown for 31 years. Last, he was employed for 20 years by Franklin County attorneys as a paralegal and title abstractor.

Paul served in the Maryland State Guard in Co. B, 115th Infantry Maryland National Guard as a warrant officer.

He was a member of the Kittochtinny Historical Society, the Brethren In Christ Historical Society and the American Numismatic Association.

He attended Messiah College in Grantham, Pa.

He and his wife, Lucille (Davis) Garling, were married Oct. 22, 1949, in Hagerstown, and resided at their current address for 52 years.

He enjoyed history and authored the book "The Garling History" in 1953.

Surviving family in addition to his wife, Lucille, are several cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Mary Garling; and a son, Paul E. Garling II.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m. from Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with the Rev. Gayle Ruble Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Montgomery Brethren In Christ Church Cemetery near Welsh Run, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service Friday.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be given to the Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268; or to the charity of one's choice.
