Mrs. Edith Virginia "Edie" Hawker, 69, of Frederick, Md., died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at her home.

She was the loving wife of Joseph E. "Joe" Hawker.

Edie was born Oct. 13, 1941, in Harrisonburg, Va. She was a daughter of the late William Albert and Violet Kidwell Rice.

She graduated from Montevideo High School, Class of 1960; Shepherd College, Class of 1964; and received her master's degree in education from the University of Maryland.

Edie was retired after more than 40 years with Frederick County Public Schools, where she taught first and second grades at Urbana, South Frederick, Waverly and Monocacy Elementary.

Edie was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Beta Delta Chapter at Shepherd College; active while working with Frederick County Teachers Association; and was a member of Frederick County retired-teacher organizations.

Surviving her, in addition to her husband, are one daughter, Donna Joe Sturtz and husband, Stephen, of Hagerstown; two sisters, Patricia A. Rice of Harrisonburg and Elizabeth Hevener of Roanoke, Va.; many nieces and nephews; and former brother-in-law, Paul Hevener.

Edie also will be remembered by many friends, including special friends Judy Main and Brenda Martz. She will also be missed by her four dogs, Max, Scooter, Sugar Belle and Bear.

Friends may call Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. James S. Flora will officiate. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
