Stress and weight

The Washington County Health Department is conducting a study using Emotional Brain Training, a method devised to treat stress and decrease the drive to overeat.

The weight-loss goal is about 10 pounds in seven weeks. The participants will meet as a group supporting each other while using the EBT skills to turn off the stress-fueled drives to overeat. The 32 participants chosen would need to be available to meet twice weekly for seven weeks on Mondays and Thursdays, 5:30 to 7 p.m., between Sept. 12 and Dec. 22. The group training and program materials are provided free.

For more information and to receive a phone screening for participation, call the health department at 240-313-3360; TTY 240-313-3391; or go to www.washhealth.org.

Shelter needs supplies

The Humane Society of Washington County is experiencing a shortage of supplies and is asking the public for its assistance.

The shelter is in need of Yesterday’s News cat litter, nonclumping clay litter and Purina Kitten Chow. Intake of mother cats and kittens has risen to about 105 a week.  The result is a depletion in the supplies for cats and kittens. A reduction in the numbers of cats being brought to the shelter is not expected until fall. The shelter is asking anyone wishing to donate supplies to bring those items to the shelter at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown,

Call 301-733-2060 or go to www.hswcmd.org for information on animal-related issues, directions to the shelter and information about programs and services.
