Members of the Williamsport High School Class of 1961 gathered for a meet-and-greet event on July 22 at Next Dimensions in Funkstown to begin a three-day event.

The class has held reunions every five years, but this was the first reunion that was a three-day affair. Friday's get-together was attended by about 35 classmates and spouses.

On July 23, the class celebrated its 50th class reunion at Potomac Fish & Game Club on Falling Waters Road in Williamsport. There were 36 class members, plus spouses, present. The master of ceremonies was Tom Downin.

The evening began with a social hour and appetizers. The group was welcomed by Downin, and faculty members were recognized. Former faculty members in attendance were Bertha Britner Miller, Bob Wantz, Joe Scott and William Byers.

Recognition also was given to classmates who served in the armed forces with a salute to veterans. Candles were lit in memory of those classmates who are deceased.

A buffet dinner was served and dessert included a cake made by Jean Hart, wife of classmate Robert "Buddy" Hart. The tables were decorated with flower arrangements made by Connie Hoffman Weaver, and an arrangement on the mantle was given by Susie Downs Kunkle. As a memento, DVDs with photo memories of classmates in their earlier years and high school days were given to each classmate by Valerie Cline Malott.

There was a short business meeting, and the class made plans to get together each year on the third Saturday in July.

Door prizes were awarded and one of those prizes was a watercolor painting donated by Bob Wantz.

Each classmate stood and gave a brief history of their lives for the past 50 years.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presence of Bruce "Sonny" Garrish, who played steel guitar with the Bill Anderson Group. There were classmates from Tennessee and Georgia in attendance. Music for the evening was provided by DJ Bobby Hays.

On July 24, eight classmates and several spouses attended church services at Williamsport United Methodist Church on Church Street in Williamsport to conclude a weekend of reminiscing.

The following classmates served on the reunion committee: Doris Hose Bowers, Barbara Martin Burger, Connie Hoffman Weaver, Susie Downs Kunkle, Joan Bragunier Knode, Valerie Cline Malott, Tom Downin, Ron Rowe, Robert "Buddy" Hart, Don Reeser, Danny Hammond and Paul Kinzer.
