Richard David Rowland Jr., 84, of South Potomac Street, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at his home.

Born Sunday, Sept. 12, 1926, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Richard David Rowland Sr. and Maxine Schildtknect Rowland.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in Iwojima. He was an engineer for the Western Maryland Railroad and Chessie System for more than 40 years.

He was of the Christian faith.

He is survived by his daughters, Marilyn Condon, Belinda Peterson and Faith Bowman, all of Hagerstown; son, Leonard Rowland of Hagerstown; sisters, Beverly Garcia of Silver Spring, Md., and Ruth Price of Greencastle, Pa.; brother, John Rowland of Silver Spring; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Aileen Virginia Rowland; daughter, Dixie Montgomery; sister, Margaret Judd; and brothers, Milton Rowland and Jack Rowland.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Graveside services will be at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740, at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
